Children's Sensory and Butterfly Garden

The Children’s Garden was established in 2017, through a partnership between the Conservancy for Ridgewood Public Lands and the Ridgewood Parks and Recreation Department.

This garden was created to encourage young people to use their five senses while learning about the joys of being outdoors.  The plantings were chosen to attract pollinators and birds, and include a large selection of shrubs, perennials and herbs, incorporating many native plants.  The garden is ADA compliant.

The play area has several permanent musical instruments, along with climbing logs and benches for comfort.  It is frequently used as an outdoor classroom and is a popular location for all ages.

The garden has recorded sightings of many species of butterflies, with the showiest being Monarchs, Black and Eastern Tiger Swallowtails, American Lady and Sulphur Blues.  Ruby Throated Hummingbirds are attracted to the honeysuckle and a variety of bees can always be found.

The water fountain and surrounding trees attract a large selection of birds and the wooden pergola provides a popular nesting area for robins.

The garden has become a hub for children’s educational activities and scout projects and is a popular destination for plein air painting.  It can also be a quiet spot for children to enjoy being outdoors, to enjoy nature and all the beauty and interest it has to offer
